Read this extraordinary story of one of our first medics, in the Shomron.

In 2002, the Shavo family suffered a terrible tragedy. An Arab terrorist broke into their home murdered his mother and three brothers in a brutal gun attack. The nine-year-old boy, Asael, who was watching TV together with his five-year-old brother at the time, was badly injured as was his sister. The father, Boaz, and three children survived.

Boaz, was one of our first volunteer medics in the Shomron region. He knew how to respond and was able to stabilize the injured children, even though he was suffering trauma himself. This was HIS family. HIS life.

Asael, the nine-year-old, had his right leg amputated as a result of the injuries and he spent two years in the hospital.

The family went into mourning. The house burned down during the attack, and the state did not support them financially. It was a difficult time to say the least.

"For as long as I can remember, Dad has been working hard just to support us," says Asael Shavu. “To take care of us and help us rebuild a home, get through the crises and grow from scratch."

Back in 1992, ten years before the terror attack, a group of Palestinians blocked a checkpoint on a main road near Nablus. Boaz was passing by at the time, and one of the Arabs threw a rock at him. Boaz responded, fired at the Arab, hitting him and wounding him.
The Palestinian sued Boaz, who was unable to successfully prove that the act was self-defense.

Years later, in 2011, Boaz was notified by the Court that this case had languished in the system, had not been properly handled, and a judgement was declared in the Arab’s favor. A large sum was assessed against Boaz.

Since then, Boaz has been fighting this case.

This month the verdict came that the Shavo family has to pay NIS 85,000 (!!). But, in addition, his legal expenses and court fees have reached NIS 500,000!

This, for a man who has lost half his family to terror, and has struggled to rebuild his life and raise his family, and support his dependants.
