Continuing in the path of the heart
Adding life in memory of Professor and Lieutenant Colonel Avi Harlev – May G-d avenge his blood.
Avi Harlev’s life was filled with continuous accomplishment characterized by a drive to help others.
As a practicing gynecologist and as the director of the Department of Fertility and Reproductive Medicine at Barzilai Hospital, Avi was able to help countless couples facing the challenges of infertility with professional excellence and emotional sensitivity.
As a lieutenant colonel in the 7th Brigade, he led significant military operations with deep devotion and courage.
As a community leader in the administration of Sansana – his beloved home and community he dutifully addressed the needs of his friends and neighbors.
And of course, all while being a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather with reliable wisdom and a calm demeanor.
Through his actions, Avi taught us that there is time for everything, and that duties and responsibilities can be extensive and diverse.
All of this productive achievement that defined his noble life was cut short in one bitter day, in which he was callously murdered when returning home from military service.
From a place of deep and profound anguish and longing, we decided to move forward in Avi’s chosen way - to rise from the pain and to eternalize his legacy by adding life. In so doing, he will continue to dwell and persist among us in his unique positive way.
Whether in the line of combat or in the halls of medicine, we invite all of those that have had the good fortune of meeting and knowing Avi, to join us in memorializing his legacy in the ways that genuinely captured his pursuits and distinctive essence.
Gathering Center and Lookout
The Brothers’ Promenade located in Sansana was an initiative that Avi helped pioneer. Along the promenade, siblings of Sansana residents are remembered and honored. Among them are Dror Weinberg z”l and Shai Weinberg z”l – Avi’s brothers-in-law. At this location, Avi in his uniquely moving way, led many groups, including those from Cleveland, Ohio - a community close to his heart, in educational tours that fused biblical, patriotic and historical elements.
The Gathering Center and Lookout will provide a meaningful and inspirational venue for communal and social gatherings with a vista and sense of purpose that Avi would certainly endorse.
Beit Midrash and permanent home of Yeshivat [Eshtamua]
Given the centrality of Torah in Avi’s layered life, he found time to assist Yehsivat [Eshtamua] in searching for a suitable location to establish its permanent home. The Yeshiva is currently functioning in temporary structures. With the intended goal of strengthening the Jewish settlement of the historically significant Mount Hevron region, it is our goal to dedicate the Beit Midrash in Avi’s name and eternal memory.
Emunatech for Women (Your Faith)
Given Avi’s professional dedication to the health and well-being of women, it is befitting that our efforts include the advancement and expansion of Emunatech – a nationwide initiative designed to provide an accessible learning platform for women seeking to develop and grow in their faith and Torah learning.
